NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, today announced that the NSW Government has chosen Merimbula as the site for a new offshore artificial reef.

“The Merimbula reef is one of five offshore artificial reefs DPI will deploy over the next three years,” said Mr. Blair.

“Over 50 different species of fish have been identified on the current offshore artificial reefs which show just how effective they are in boosting fish habitats.”

The reefs are constructed from a series of steel or concrete modules, which are nonpolluting, have a minimum design-life of 30 years and can withstand a 1-in 100-year storm event.

Following the tender and construction process, the reef is expected to be installed and ready for casting a line in 2018.
