Work to rebuild the South New Brighton jetty is set to begin during the next month, the Christchurch City Council just announced.
The current jetty was knocked around in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and sustained further damage in a severe storm during 2013.
The council has approved $400,000 to build a replacement and the project will be carried out by Christchurch-based contractor Solutions 2 Access.
Christchurch City Council Project Manager, Mike Sheffield , said that deconstruction of the existing jetty will start in a few weeks and work on the new one will start from the end of April.
“There’s always been a need for it and the community and Council have worked together to reinstate it as quickly as we can, putting back like for like,” said Sheffield.
“They’ll be taking existing decking off and removing the existing piles and installing new ones that are longer and more robust.”
The new jetty is expected to be completed in late July or August this year depending on weather conditions.
