The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, has started the Cleveland Harbor federal navigation lower channel dredging project.
According to the Corps, the 2017 spring dredging season began on Tuesday, April 11.
USACE also announced that the start of upper navigation channel dredging is expected to begin around April 21.
“ In the fall of 2016 our contractor had some equipment issues, we paused the federal dredging to accommodate ArcelorMittal’s requested dredging and there was bad weather which cut our time short ,” said USACE Buffalo District Commander Lt. Col. Adam Czekanski .
The Corps contractor first attempted to finish dredging at the ArcelorMittal steel mill docks, where the sediment buildup was the worst, but after one week of work, the project came to a halt due to the breakdown of a dredge pump.
This $3.7 million Cuyahoga River dredging project was awarded last October to Ryba Marine Construction of Cheboygan, Michigan.
