The New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Office of Maritime Resources (NJDOT/OMR) proposes to perform hydraulic maintenance dredging within St. George’s Thorofare and dispose of 13,300 cubic yards of dredged material on the Absecon Inlet Beach area, USACE said.
According to the official announcement , the applicant is requesting the reauthorization of a 10 year maintenance dredging permit to maintain the existing 1,966 linear feet by 100 feet wide state navigation channel at the same dimensions, project depth and utilization of the disposal site/area.
The proposed maintenance dredging would impact 196,455 square feet (4.51 acres) of tidal waters of the United States and would occur a minimum of 25 feet from the lower limits of the surrounding tidal wetlands.
Under this plan, the dredged material will be pumped via pipeline to the proposed disposal site located south of the dredging area.
Prior to the deposition of the dredged material at the beach disposal area, the applicant plans to construct a training dike/sand berm to contain the dredged slurry for dewatering prior to the final grading of the material.
Public comments on this project should be submitted by April 28, 2017, USACE said.
