A group of teachers from Palmquist Elementary School in Oceanside yesterday toured the Oceanside Harbor dredging project, conducted by Manson Construction.

Jim Fields, the Corps’ Oceanside Harbor maintenance dredging project manager, hosted the visitors and presented the latest information about the navigation dredging project that began April 17.

The project, which will dredge up to 320,000 cubic yards of sediment from the harbor’s entrance channel and place it along Oceanside’s shoreline, is an annual project to maintain navigation safety for military, commercial and recreational vessels that use the port as home.

Manson Construction has successfully dredged Oceanside Harbor in the past, and Corps officials anticipate no difficulties meeting the Memorial Day completion date, the official announcement stated.

The visit was organized by Kim Calkwell, with the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Educational Services, to enable teachers to better develop real-world learning experiences for their students and to get students connected to their community, USACE said.
