The Borough of Stone Harbor (NJ) yesterday released an update on the periodic nourishment and repair of the dune and berm system in Avalon and Stone, the Avalon/Stone Harbor Beach Replenishment project.
Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company dredge “Texas” departed recently the Avalon work site to finish a beach fill project in Cape May. The Cape May project has involved the dredge “Illinois” which departed Cape May for a project in North Carolina.
The borough reported that due to a weather conditions that moved into the area over the weekend, predicted 4-5 foot seas in Townsend Inlet, the dredge Texas has remained in the Cape May Channel.
“ Weather conditions observed, which included rough seas and dense fog, are being monitored and tugs currently stationed at the Townsend Inlet and the Cape May Inlet will notify the dredge crew when conditions are more favorable ,” the borough said.
“ The forecast is for the seas to calm down but it will take until Thursday afternoon before the conditions will allow the dredge to get into the Townsend Inlet and setup. It is predicted that start up will begin on Thursday, April 27th in the evening ,” the borough added.
By contract, GLDD needs to finish the Avalon portion of the beach fill project by May 23rd, and the next phase of the project involving the very southerly limits of Avalon and northern Stone Harbor by June 22nd.
In total, the Avalon/Stone Harbor Beach Replenishment project will place 940,000 cubic yards of sand on the Avalon beaches between 9th Street and the north end of 38th Street in order to restore the beachfront in the borough to their full federal template.
