The Willoughby Spit and Vicinity coastal storm damage reduction project is now in its 11 week with beach nourishment operations occurring between 9th and 8th View Street & at 12th View St.

So far, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, has moved over 1,022,000 cubic yards of sand onto the shoreline.

The project – the largest single storm damage reduction scheme in the City of Norfolk – stands at 85% complete, according to the Corps.

In total, this beach nourishment project will place 1.2 million cubic yards of sand along 7.3 miles of shoreline, widening the beach to 60 feet and creating a slope to 5 feet above mean low water.

The project area is located in the city of Norfolk, Virginia, along the southern portion of the Chesapeake Bay extending from the tip of Willoughby Spit near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to the federal navigation project at Little Creek Inlet.
