The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is closing the West Newton Chute Boat Landing on the Mississippi River near Kellogg, Minnesota, on or around May 20.
USACE’s contractor, Dubuque Barge and Fleeting Service, from Dubuque, Iowa, has mobilized to the site, and the boat landing is being closed due to the heavy equipment operating within the area. The landing will be closed for the duration of the construction process.
The dredging activity is expected to be complete by the end of fall 2019, USACE said.
USACE awarded the contract to remove around 1.3 million cubic yards of dredged material from Lost Island, a temporary storage area west of Buffalo City, Wisconsin, in September 2016.
The material is being moved to a permanent upland placement site located in Kellogg.
USACE is working in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to ensure the boat landing area remains safe during the construction process.
