County of Dare, North Carolina, yesterday released a new video on the status of the Hatteras Inlet dredging program.
According to the project update, the planned dredging within the connecting channel of Hatteras Inlet is currently underway.
USACE’s sidecaster dredger Merritt is back in the inlet, working on the connecting channel. The dredging operations will continue for 21 days, or until June 15th – whichever comes first.
The dredging will attempt to clear up the shoaling in the connecting channel located between the Ocracoke South Ferry Terminal and the Inlet Gorge, so that vessels can safely access the ocean.
The agreement which is funded by the state of North Carolina and Dare County allows USACE to dredge up to four times a year in the inlet’s non-federal waters, but USACE can only work on the project if it is already working on a nearby federally authorized channel, the county said.
