The town of Wellfleet is seeking a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, to conduct work in waters of the U.S. in order to dredge in Wellfleet Harbor at Kendrick Avenue in Wellfleet, Mass.
The proposed work involves maintenance dredging of all town-managed channels and anchorage areas in Wellfleet Harbor to -6 feet mean low water (MLW), with 1 foot over-dredge.
A total area of approximately 38.5 acres will be mechanically dredged and produce approximately 378,300 cubic yards of sandy sediment for disposal at the Cape Cod Bay Disposal Site.
Area 1, which is comprised of the North and South Access Channels, the North Anchorage, and the L-Pier Access Channel, is 14.6 acres, will produce 118,300 cubic yards, and was last dredged in 2001. Approximately 2.4 acres, or 16%, of Area 1 is intertidal flats, USACE said.
Area 2, which is the south anchorage, is 23.8 acres, will produce 248,000 cubic yards, and was last dredged in 1957. Approximately 13.9 acres, or 58%, of Area 2 is intertidal flats.
Through the development of this project, the applicant has attempted to avoid and minimize direct impacts to waters of the U.S. The Corps continues to work with the applicant to minimize temporary construction impacts (noise and turbidity impacts) to waters of the U.S.
Public comments on this work proposed by the town of Wellfleet should be submitted no later than June 23, USACE said.
