The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is inviting the public to attend a community information session on three different coastal projects at Black Rock, Hampton and Sandringham, the State Government of Victoria said.
The community information session, on Saturday 3 June, will give people the opportunity to hear more about the three projects taking place, the official announcement stated.
DELWP Senior Project Manager, Cass Philippou, said: “ This community information session is a great opportunity to see what is being proposed for the bayside coast and ask any questions.”
“Before next Summer, DELWP will complete a beach renourishment at Hampton Beach. The renourishment will return sand to the Hampton foreshore and help protect the coastal cliffs and infrastructure from erosion.”
“The renourishment will also include construction of a 140 meter long rock groyne that is needed to hold the renourished sand on Hampton Beach.”
“Consultation on the modification of the Southey Street groyne at Sandringham Beach took place last year and received a lot of feedback from the community.
“As a result, the groyne will be reduced in length by 30 meters and the height will also be reduced.” Ms Philippou said.
“The beach will be renourished and the excess rock from shortening and lowering the groyne will be used to construct a rock revetment to protect the nearby beach access ramp.”
Black Rock seawall has suffered frequent storm damage over the past decade. It is proposed to construct a rock revetment in front of a section of the seawall to protect it and to reduce the amount of water overtopping the seawall from large waves.
A community information session on the revetment at Black Rock was held on 26 April and RMIT students have undertaken a community survey.
The community information session will be held from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday, 3 June, at ‘Sandy by the Bay’, Sandringham Football Club, Beach Road, Sandringham.
