Congressman Tom Rice yesterday announced $16 million in federal funding will go to beachfront renourishment projects in Myrtle Beach to repair damages caused by Hurricane Matthew and other storms.
“Over the past few years beaches along the Grand Strand have taken a beating from Hurricane Matthew and other storms,” said Congressman Rice.
“My office has worked closely with federal and local entities to secure funding for the northern and southern parts of our coast, and I’m proud to announce this $16 million for renourishment in Myrtle Beach. Beaches are such an important part of our economy and this funding is critical to their livelihood.”
Following hurricanes and floods that have severely impacted South Carolina in recent years, Congressman Rice worked with the Army Corps of Engineers and the House Appropriations Committee to assess beachfront damages and secure funding through federal spending bills.
This $16 million will address the Myrtle Beach reach of the Myrtle Beach Shore Protection Project. In 2016, Congressman Rice worked to secure $16 million for the southern reach of the project and in March of this year announced $10 million for the northern reach of the project. In total, Congressman Rice has helped secure nearly $51 million for beach repairs along the Grand Strand.
