The Indian Coast Guard and Coastal Security Police of Karnataka have rescued 27 workers of the dredger Ibis, which suffered damage after hitting the reef in the Arabian Sea, about a kilometer from the Ullal beach.
The Indian Coast Guard headquarters at Panambur in New Mangalore received information about the incident through a telephone message from New Mangalore Port Trust at 4.45 pm on Saturday, the Indian Coast Guard-ICG said in its announcement.
Following this, the Coast Guard diverted Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Amartya to render assistance to the distressed dredger.
The ICGS Amartya arrived at the position at 6.40 p.m. and established communication with the dredger.
On assessment of the weather condition in area, the ICGS Amartya lowered its Gemini (inflatable rubber boat) with diving officer and boarding team at 6.48 p.m.
Later on, the ICGS Amartya entered the New Mangalore harbor along with the rescued crew members.
