Mercator Ltd, one of India’s diversified conglomerates with interests in coal, oil and gas, shipping and dredging, has won a contract for maintenance dredging work at the Karaikal Port.

Mercator said in its statement today that this dredging program will be completed during the first half of FY2018.

Karaikal Port is envisaged to have a total of 9 berths capable of handling 47 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) by 2018, the port stated on its official website.

“The vision behind the port is to create a gateway to central Tamil Nadu, a strategic location where a major chunk of the state’s industrial belt is located. This gateway will catalyze rapid growth in central Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” the port said.

Mercator won a similar contract last month from the New Mangalore Port Trust for maintenance dredging at New Mangalore Port for a period of three years.

The company, formerly Mercator Lines, is the second largest private sector shipping company in India, and is based in Mumbai.
