The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, has just announced that work on the Absecon Island Coastal Storm Damage Reduction project in Atlantic City, NJ, is progressing well.

According to the Corps, the ocean-going hydraulic cutter suction dredge C.R. McCaskill is conducting dredging and beachfill operations at the north end of Atlantic City.

USACE also reported that the hopper dredges RN Weeks and BE Lindholm are expected to arrive within the next two weeks and begin work on the island at Ventnor City, NJ.

The $63.3 million Absecon Island project was awarded in late 2016 to Weeks Marine Inc. Work involves completing the dune and berm system in Margate and Longport as well as the scheduled nourishment of the previously constructed section of the project in Atlantic City and Ventnor City.

During the course of the project, more than 3.8 million cubic yards of sand will be dredged from approved borrow areas and pumped through a series of pipes onto the beaches of the four municipalities.

Work in Margate is tentatively scheduled to start in mid-July and Longport around the third week of September.
