The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) have signed a $154 million contract for the Dar es Salaam port expansion program.
Under this capital development scheme, which will be implemented in the next three years, berths No 1-7 will be strengthened and deepened to 15.5 meters.
The upgrading of the berths will enable the port to receive larger cargo ships, TPA said in its official statement.
The project, funded by a World Bank loan, will also involve the construction of a roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) terminal.
“Deepening and strengthening of the berths will allow big container ships to dock in Dar es Salaam. All these efforts are being done in order to increase competitiveness of the port,” said Makame Mbarawa, Works, Transport and Communications Minister, at the signing ceremony.
Tanzania plans to position itself as a regional trade hub and expects that this expansion scheme will increase cargo throughput from around 14 to 28 million tons a year by 2020.
