ICE East Midlands Civil Engineering Merit Awards 2017 took place at the Belfry in Nottingham on 9 June.

Thirty-two projects from five East Midlands’ counties, as well as projects located in the South West and South East, competed for recognition at these prestigious awards.

Ray Dickinson, ICE East Midlands Chair 2016-17 said: “ This annual event is a great opportunity to celebrate the civil engineering profession and the inspirational people and teams who are often unseen, but who help our society to function and improve our lives. ”

“ I congratulate the winners of our 2017 Awards and all entrants. These awards are a chance for them to feel proud of their hard work and dedication which often goes unnoticed by the general public. ”

Among the winners is the £1 million Heanor, Breach Road flood alleviation scheme. According to the judges, the scheme – winner of the medium merit award – scored well in quality of submission, planning, communication and overall impact of project.

Also, the Proposed Daventry Canal – Water Supply Strategy Study was among the winners, scoring the Studies and Research merit award for providing clear evidence of detail research and planning, coupled with an innovative outcome and bench mark for modern canal design practice.

The awards were presented by Professor Tim Broyd, ICE President 2016-17, during a black-tie dinner attended by over 300 guests.
