The Chesterfield Canal Trust hosted their Dredging Open Day in Ranby on Tuesday, June 13, to present some latest updates on the Chesterfield Canal dredging scheme, which is currently underway.

The trust’s team of experts were on hand to talk to visitors about why dredging is so important to both the navigation of waterways and and the surrounding environment.

Under this cleanup project, the canal is being dredged with the aim of giving a depth of 1.3 m from a point 800m north (down stream) of Bridge 51 (Chequer House Bridge – Ranby Village) where the reservoir is on the offside, to 100m west of Bridge 50 (Osberton Mill Bridge).

The silt will be placed in a field to the right of the canal (looking at bridge 50A (A1 Road Bridge) from the Ranby side) between Ranby Village and just before the A1 (Bridge 50A).

Dredging will create an area of canal in close proximity of the dredger where the oxygen in the water is depleted.
