The Environment Agency has just reported that the £7 million Northwich Flood Alleviation scheme was officially opened last Friday, June 30.

Cheshire West and Chester Council Leader Samantha Dixon, Jane Myerscough-Illidge Mayor of Northwich and officials from the Environment Agency were in the town for the official launch.

The scheme is made up of 1.7km of flood defenses using a combination of flood walls and embankments, along the banks of the River Dane and River Weaver.

According to the EA, this will reduce the flood risk for 1,050 people and more than 400 homes, businesses and three development sites in the town center. In turn creating 1,500 permanent jobs and potentially generating £60 million a year.

The project comes as the result of close effective partnership working between the Environment Agency, Northwich Town Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Northwich BID and the Canal and Rivers Trust as well as local businesses and the wider community.
