The Environment Agency recently extended deadline for Ipswich Flood Barrier artwork project.
The creations will be installed at 2 locations – across the 3 doors of the barrier’s control building, and within a circular space on the West Bank of the New Cut. The deadline for submission of the designs is July 28, 2017.
Work on the £58 million Ipswich Flood barrier scheme, which is being undertaken by VBA – the joint venture between VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and Atkins, is already well under way and is due to be completed in 2018.
The scheme involves the design, construction and installation of a 20m wide tidal barrier gate, construction of piled flood defense walls on either side of the barrier, a MEICA control building, the installation of mechanical and electrical equipment, flood gates on the east and west banks within the flood walls, scour protection and landscaping works.
Nick Culshaw, VBA operations director , said: “The barrier, along with additional flood defenses undertaken by VBA, will prevent any surge tides and allow the control of fluvial flow as required in the future.”
Once successfully completed, VBA will maintain the new tidal barrier for a further two years.
