Nearshore artificial reef construction at Mid-Reach in Brevard County is underway and progressing smoothly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Jacksonville District said in its latest announcement.

The reefs are being built in advance of future beach renourishment from Satellite Beach to Indialantic, said USACE.

About 4.8 acres of reef will be constructed to mitigate up to 3 acres of nearshore rock that might be impacted by future sand placement.

USACE and its contractor, Shoreline Foundation, Inc., started this project in June 2017.

Brevard County is the local sponsor for this work, which is part of the county “Mid-Reach” federal shore protection project located between the southern end of Patrick Air Force Base and Indialantic.
