The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recently released latest update on the Cat Island restoration project in Green Bay.

The Cat Island project is a multi-partner habitat restoration project that involves reconstructing three islands in the lower bay, providing 272 acres of habitat for shorebirds, waterfowl, amphibians, turtles, etc.

The restoration project includes three islands with a connecting dike that serves as a wave barrier.

The islands will be reconstructed over the next 20 to 30 years by the U.S. Corps of Engineers using clean dredge material from the maintenance of the Green Bay Harbor, a beneficial reuse of the material.

The first phase of Cat Island reconstruction began in 2012, with funding from a $1.5 million Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative grant.
