A multi-million dollar Surfside Beach renourishment project is still on hold following last week’s mechanical issue with the pump station.
The town reported that due to yesterday’s rough surf and high winds, they were unable to complete repairs offshore.
“ The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the contractor, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD), are troubleshooting the problems in order to repair the damaged equipment as soon as possible ,” the town said.
If the weather cooperates, they hope to complete the necessary repairs and resume pumping today. Once the operation resumes, the contractor will be working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Surfside Beach renourishment scheme is being performed under the $26.3 million contract for the Myrtle Beach Storm Damage Reduction Project. During the works, GLDD will place approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of material on North Myrtle Beach and Garden City and Surfside Beaches.
This project is funded through federal emergency beach rehabilitation funding from Hurricane Matthew, along with cost-shared construction funding appropriated through Congress.
