The Springville Dam Ecosystem Restoration project team yesterday hosted a media event and site walk to highlight the signing of the Project Partnership Agreement at the Springville Dam located at 11024 Scoby Rd, Springville, NY.
The formal agreement between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Erie County, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers allows the project to move forward with design and eventually construction.
“The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proud to be part of the partnership with Erie County and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation that will ultimately deliver a project providing great ecological benefit to the region. The Springville Dam project protects and ensures the long term sustainability of a vital ecosystem within the Cattaraugus Creek watershed, and I would like to thank Congressmen Collins and Reed for their continued support on this project,” said Lt. Col. Adam Czekanski, USACE Buffalo District Commander.
“Any type of significant effort made to restore our ecosystem is something that should be applauded. Erie County is thrilled to be a partner in helping the Springville Dam project become a reality. Doing what we can to help protect wildlife is noble and I thank all those involved for putting partisan politics aside to achieve our shared goal of ecosystem restoration,” said Mark Poloncarz, Erie County Executive.
The purpose of the Springville Dam Ecosystem Restoration Project is to restore ecological connectivity of the upper Cattaraugus Creek watershed to the downstream areas of the creek and Lake Erie.
