The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, has just announced the award of a $5.9 million maintenance dredging contract for the Wilmington Harbor Anchorage Basin in New Brunswick and New Hanover counties, North Carolina.

According to the Corps, the dredging contract was awarded to Southern Dredging Co., Inc. of Charleston, South Carolina.

The work includes maintenance dredging of upper Wilmington Harbor federal navigation channel reaches including the Anchorage Basin, Between Channel, and 32-ft Turning Basin, and the North Carolina State Ports Authority (NCSPA) berth areas and Turning Basin Extension.

The project calls for removal and disposal of shoaled material that has accumulated in the channels and berth areas since the various areas were last dredged. The work will require a hydraulic cutter suction dredge.

Dredging depths are 32′ plus 2′ of allowable overdepth for the 32-ft Turning Basin, 38′ plus 2′ of allowable overdepth for station 0+00 to 40+00 of the Anchorage Basin, and 42′ plus 2′ of allowable overdepth for station 40+00 to 84+05 of the Anchorage Basin and for Between Channel. Dredging depths are 43′ plus 1′ of allowable overdepth for the NCSPA berth areas and Turning Basin Extension, reported the Corps.

The estimated quantity of material to be dredged is 1.4 million cubic yards with the disposal area located in the Eagle Island Cell No. 3 upland diked disposal area.

The environmental window for dredging the NCSPA berth areas is 1 October 2017 through 31 January 2018. The environmental window for dredging the Wilmington Harbor federal navigation channel reaches is 1 August 2017 through 31 January 2018.
