The West Beach Boat Launch will close until 31 August to allow for the removal of seagrass wrack clogging the boat ramps and channel, the Government of South Australia said in its latest release.
Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) Manager, Coastal Management, Murray Townsend, said that storms last Saturday had caused severe seagrass congestion at the West Beach Boat Launch at Adelaide Shores and in the nearby Glenelg harbor.
“Seagrass wrack can become a problem after severe weather because it tears away in heavy seas, leaving it floating free or allowing it to wash onto beaches,” Dr Townsend said.
“Adelaide Shores and DEWNR have engaged contractors to clear the marina and channels as soon as possible, using both floating and land-based equipment.
“DEWNR has also organized a dredger to clear the channel, with work to begin on 27 August, weather permitting.
“The dredger will then move on to Glenelg harbor once West Beach is usable.”
Adelaide Shores Chief Executive Officer Kate Williams added that closing the boat launch would allow the work to be undertaken safely and quickly.
