A flood defense scheme in Somerset, carried out by Team Van Oord on behalf of the Environment Agency, has been recognized in two national awards schemes.

The Cannington Flood Defense Scheme, completed earlier this year, has been awarded a 2017 Green Apple Environment Award and is shortlisted in the 2017 BIG Biodiversity Challenge Awards.

The new flood defenses, completed by Team Van Oord on behalf of the Environment Agency, greatly improve the standard of flood protection for around 200 homes and businesses in the village to at least a 100-year standard. This means only a 1% chance of flooding in any year.

The Cannington scheme has been shortlisted in the Medium Scale Permanent Award category in the 2017 BIG Challenge Awards, which will be presented at a ceremony on 14 September, said TVO.

A delegation representing the scheme will collect the Green Apple Award at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on 14 November.
