The dredging work on the Vistula Spit canal has been scheduled to begin in November 2018, the Polish Press Agency (PPA) said in its latest announcement.

Earlier, in the second quarter of 2018, a decision on the ecological impact caused by the project is expected, according to the deputy Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation, Grzegorz Witkowski.

“As soon as the decision is made, we will ask the Pomorskie province governor for permission to proceed with the investment. We don’t expect any delays in the matter. At the same time, the precise location will be decided. Everything points to the canal being built near the Nowy Swiat township,” Witkowski said.

The cost of the investment is calculated at around EUR206.9 million, PPA said.

The deputy minister also stated that the general contractor for the investment will be selected in the third quarter of 2018. “Considering the selection of the general contractor and the appeal process, the whole procedure will take several months. Assuming there will be appeals, I can confirm with certainty that the first shovels will hit the ground in November 2018,” Witkowski added.

According to PPA’s announcement, an agreement was signed with the Gdansk University of Technology in mid-August, concerning the scientific and technical oversight for the dredging.
