The Port of Naantali, located in the south-west of Finland, has started a construction work to extend an existing quay from 178 to 228 meters in order to create additional vessel handling infrastructure, the shipping operator Finnlines Plc said in its latest release.
According to the announcement, “this will support Finnlines’ plans to expand its traffic between Finland, Åland and Sweden enabling Finnlines larger vessels to enter the port.”
The Port of Naantali said that the ongoing port investment program will cost approximately EUR 4 million. The Port of Kapellskär in Sweden has also been expanded and now has five modern quay-berths.
“These investments in Naantali and Kapellskär support our strategy to optimize the use of our vessels and routes. This also enables us to develop our traffic between Finland, Åland and Sweden and the use of all our vessel types and more flexible use of the fleet. These investments will strengthen Finnlines’ services and we can serve our customers even better and meet their growing demand for top quality cargo and passenger services,” said Tom Pippingsköld, CFO, Finnlines Plc.
The Naantali construction works started earlier this month and are scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2018.
