J.E. McAmis has teamed up with Kapstone Paper to keep Kapstone’s Longview Paper Facility receiving barge loads of chips, in spite of silted in channel conditions.
According to the company, this year’s high flows on the Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers lead to significant shoaling in the vicinity of Kapstone Papers plant which depends on barge loads of chips to operate efficiently.
While waiting for the environmental window to open for dredging, J.E. McAmis and Kapstone developed a system of transloading and shuttling barges to and from the dock. The system has been in place for over two months and has kept Kapstone’s Longview plant running strong in spite of greatly restricted river depths.
Over the past two months, J.E. McAmis and Kapstone have teamed up to unload more than 50 barges of product.
Late this October, once the environmental window for dredging opens, J.E. McAmis will shift efforts towards dredging more than 50,000 cubic yards out of the approach and off of the face of Kapstone’s dock.
