Two popular beaches in Airlie Beach will be rejuvenated with new sand over the next fortnight, jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), Whitsunday Regional Council said in its latest release.
When Tropical Cyclone Debbie hit the Whitsundays in March and some sandy beaches were eaten away by the strong winds and high tides.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said that the Category D beach replenishment funding was received just in time to fix up the beaches before summer.
“ We are getting back to business, and this beach replenishment funding will help restore our beaches for all of our Airlie Beach locals and visitors,” he said.
The new sand to replenish the beaches will be taken from the Don River, in the north of in the region.
Work began yesterday to renourish Shingley Beach with 1100 cubic meters of sand, and is expected to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting.
During the next week, the council will move onto the main Airlie Beach, near the foreshore, placing around 1250 cubic meters of sand on the beach.
