The United States Representative for New York’s 11th Congressional District, Dan Donovan, yesterday met with FEMA, the Army Corps of Engineers and other stakeholders to discuss plans for the $620 million seawall on Staten Island’s East Shore.
“I had a very productive meeting this morning with the head of FEMA’s flood insurance program, Roy Wright, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District Commander, Col. Thomas Asbery, and the new head of FEMA Region 2, former FDNY commissioner Tom Von Essen,” said Rep. Donovan after the meeting.
“The most important takeaway: FEMA confirmed that the seawall will reduce flood insurance premiums and many homes will be removed from the high-risk zone altogether.”
“This $600 million project will be transformative. It will protect life and property AND reduce flood insurance costs. My team is on the phone with the Corps, the City, and the State all the time to monitor progress, and we’ll continue to stay on top of this,” concluded Rep. Donovan.
The seawall, which will run from Fort Wadsworth to Oakwood Beach, will start construction in phases in 2019, with an expected completion date of 2023.
