The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, invites the public to attend a community meeting for the upcoming St. Augustine Beach renourishment project.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 2 at 6 p.m. at the St. Augustine Beach City Hall, USACE said.
The purpose of the meeting is to provide information about the project, and any potential impacts to the area. A brief presentation will be followed by a question and answer period, USACE said.
Construction is expected to begin in November and will last for approximately three months. Marinex Construction, Inc., the contractor, will place approximately 800,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand from the navigation channel and ebb shoal onto eroded areas.
The main goal of the project is to mitigate for down-drift shoreline impacts caused by the federal navigation channel at St. Augustine Inlet, and provide storm damage reduction for upland development.
“This project exemplifies the great partnership between the Corps and St. Johns County,” said Project Manager Jason Harrah . “We want to ensure that the public is well informed of the upcoming project, projected dates of beach closure, etc.”
The cost share is 80.5% federal and 19.5% non-federal.
This project will renourish critically eroded shoreline between the southern limits of Anastasia State Park (8th St.) in St. Augustine Beach. The federal project, led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is in partnership with St. Johns County.
