The last pile has been put in place at Tacoma’s Husky Terminal Pier 4, according to the Northwest Seaport Alliance.
Since awarding the contract to Manson Construction Company and launching the first phase of the project in May 2016, the construction is now more than halfway complete.
“ The last of the 1,245 piles on Pier 4 was driven Wednesday afternoon, celebrating progress on construction to reconfigure the berth at Husky Terminal in the Tacoma ,” reports the company.
All of the project’s 1,245 piling were made by a local company, Concrete Technology Corporation. With the pile driving part of the project now complete, work continues on the wharf deck to reconfigure the berth.
The Pier 4 work is part of $250 million in terminal improvements that began in September 2016 on Tacoma’s General Central Peninsula. Upgrades include strengthening and realigning a berth and adding eight new super-post-Panamax cranes capable of serving two 18,000-TEU container ships at the same time.
The reconstructed berth at the northwest end of the Blair Waterway will also include conduit for future shore power to allow ships to plug into electricity while at dock.
Construction and the first four cranes are estimated to be done in 2018. Four additional cranes will arrive in 2019.
