The Los Angeles District Environmental Research Branch hosted the Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory for a Hands-on Riparian Restoration Workshop from November 14 to 17 in the Prado Basin.

Workshop participants helped restore an arundo removal site along the Santa Ana River in Norco, California, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Los Angeles District said in their latest announcement.

The site will be monitored over time to evaluate the success of the planting techniques and their effect on river function.

Field and classroom portions of the workshop focused on river dynamics, bio-engineering concepts and stream bank protection using natural materials.

Other agencies participating in the workshop included the Corps’ Planning and Regulatory branches, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USFWS Pacific Region, National Park Service, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, counties of Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino, Santa Ana Watershed Association and several of the Corps’ contracted environmental consulting firms.
