The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, has just released the latest update on their Boardman Dam Removal and River Restoration project in Traverse City, Michigan.
The $6.3 million program is now 82% complete as the contractor Michels Corporation prepares to shut down for the winter.
“ Our Detroit District team was on site last week to verify sediment removal quantities, ” said USACE.
The fabric encapsulated soil lifts were completed below Cass Road Bridge, excavation of sediment from the river channel and sediment traps continues, and flood plain grading and sloping is ongoing, according to the latest announcement.
The Boardman Dam removal will assist in the restoration of the natural aquatic ecosystem as well as provide internal connectivity to Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan.
“ This project will help restore the Boardman River to its pre-dam configuration and result in significant ecological benefits throughout the watershed ,” said Carl Platz, Great Lakes program manager, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The project is being completed through an Interagency Agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Corps with funding provided through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
