The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, is working on a project to dredge the federal navigation channels of the Sandusky Harbor in order to maintain sufficient depth for deep-draft vessels.
According to the Corps, dredging in 2018 will be conducted within the Bay Channel, Turning Basin, and upper portion of the Straight Channel.
“ The 2018 dredging operation at Sandusky Harbor is tentatively scheduled to be performed during the period between July 1 and March 15 ,” USACE said.
The main aim of the project is to insure that the minimum authorized depth is maintained throughout the navigation season, with an additional removal of two feet of shoal, including one foot of over-depth and one foot of advance maintenance dredging.
The Corps estimates that approximately 350,000 cubic yards of sediment will be dredged from Sandusky Harbor federal navigation channels during the 2018 dredging operation.
“ Sediments will be removed from the channel bottom by a mechanical dredge and placed into hoppers aboard ship or scow for transport to the designated dredged sediment placement area ,” added the Army Corps.
The deadline for sending comments on the proposed dredging of the Sandusky Harbor is January 22, 2018.
