One of South Australia’s largest port operators, the Flinders Ports has applied to the State Planning Commission to widen the existing shipping channel at the Outer Harbor, Adelaide.
The project involves widening the Outer Harbor Channel by approximately 40 meters for a distance of 7 kilometers.
This will require dredging approximately 1.55 million cubic meters of material and placing it 30 kilometers off shore in the same area used for the previous 2005 Port Adelaide Channel Deepening project.
According to Flinders Ports, the project is necessary because the number of ships calling into Outer Harbor has quadrupled this year and is expected to double again in 2018.
If approved, the proposed Outer Harbor Channel Widening Project is expected to occur on a 24 hour, 7 days a week basis.
