Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has successfully concluded the land reclamation phase to develop an airport in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi, local media reports.

The major development project began in November 2017 with the MTCC’s new trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) ‘Mahaa Jarraafu’.

The dredger, designed and built by Royal IHC yard in Qidong, China, is the largest in the Easydredge series of standard twin-screw trailing suction hopper dredgers, with a length of overall 92.95 meters and a hopper capacity of 3.700m³ per load.

Inaugurated by the Maldives’ President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, a total of six hectares were reclaimed from the west side of the island along with six hectares from the island’s mangrove.
