The Avon Beach Promenade improvement works in Christchurch will begin later this month, reports the Dorset County Council.
As part of the council’s ongoing program of works to improve and renovate the coastal defenses, these works will see the lower section of the promenade raised by approximately 900mm and some of the promenade widened. These improvements will ensure better protection for the promenade and cliffs, along with the residential streets and properties above.
Following an open tender process, PT Contractors Ltd were awarded the contract in December 2017. They will begin work on Monday 22 January 2018 and construction is expected to last approximately eight weeks.
Cllr Margaret Phipps, Champion for Rivers and Coastal Issues, Christchurch Borough Council said “ It’s imperative that we do all we can to protect our distinctive coastline in Christchurch. We are proud of our Council’s ongoing coastal protection program and I look forward to seeing these works completed.”
The Council’s capital program allocated monies for the work with additional funding agreed by Resources Committee in December 2017. The total cost of the project is expected to be £461,000, of which nearly £90,000 will be met by the Dorset Coastal Connections portfolio project and £74,400 by a third party contribution.
