The Nottinghamshire County Council said that a major scheme worth almost £5 million has been given the go-ahead from the government to help protect residents and businesses in Southwell from the devastating effects of flooding.

The news comes after the council led two partnership bids to DEFRA to help push forward plans to transform the town’s flood defenses.

Final sign-off for the national funding is expected shortly.

The scheme comes in two parts, with the main bid – worth £4.6 million – involving engineering work to construct new flood defenses across the town. Extensive flood modelling work has been carried out following the many flooding events in the town to develop a range of measures to help safeguard the community.

This main bid includes a £600k investment from the council to support the works, together with local partner contributions.

Work is expected to begin in the spring once a contractor has been appointed.
