The Town of East Hampton (NY) is looking for a permit to perform maintenance dredging of Georgica Pond and Georgica Cove with upland placement of all dredged material and periodic excavation of a cut between Georgica Pond and the Atlantic Ocean.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, the Town sent an application for the Department of the Army permit regarding the proposed project.
“ The permit applicant, has requested Department of the Army (DA) authorization to perform dredging with ten-year maintenance of Georgica Pond and Georgica Cove with temporary stockpile placement of all resultant dredged material upland of the Plane of Spring High Water ,” reported the Corps.
Previous DA permit (NAN-2002-01491) issued to the Town of East Hampton for ten-year maintenance dredging of Georgica Pond with temporary upland stockpile placement of all resultant dredged material, expired on 07 January 2015.
The applicant proposes annual dredge removal of up to approximately 15,000-cubic yards of bottom sediments from the pond, with temporary stockpile placement of all resultant dredged material on the beach, upland of the Plane of Spring High Water, east of the southern terminus of Georgica Association Road.
To prepare for dredging, the water level in Georgica Pond will be lowered by excavating a channel to temporarily connect the pond with the ocean, then closing the connecting channel when the required pond level is attained.
The stated purpose of this project is to remedy shoaling conditions at Georgica Cove, regulate water levels and salinity in Georgica Pond to alleviate flooding, improve water quality, reduce the potential for algal blooms, and provide sand for future nourishment projects in the Atlantic Ocean littoral system throughout the Town of East Hampton.
