Work continues at Spanish Pass Ridge and Marsh Restoration project to restore 78 acres of marsh ridge habitat, according to the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority’s latest announcement.

Located west of LA Hwy 23 in Venice, LA along the north side of Spanish Pass, this $18 million project will provide coastal upland and marsh habitat, restore natural hydrology and provide a buffer to attenuate wave and storm surge impact.

The main purpose of this scheme is restoration of a historic ridge backed by a marsh platform using dredged material removed through the routine operation and maintenance dredging of the USACE Authorized Navigation Project within the Hopper Dredge Disposal Area (HDDA).

The feature would include construction of an approximately 5,000-foot long ridge backed by an approximately 500-foot wide marsh platform that would serve as a means to reduce wave energy on the leeward side of the marsh.

This project is part of the Louisiana Coastal Area, Beneficial Use of Dredged Material Program.
