The Delaware River deepening project, undertaken to allow more efficient transportation of containerized, dry bulk and liquid bulk (crude oil and petroleum products) cargo to and from the Delaware River ports, continues to progress.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District, has just released this beautiful photo of Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company’s drill barge Apache, one of the vessels working to make the river and its ports more accessible to deeper draft ships.

She is currently conducting rock blasting operations, as part of the Delaware River Main Channel Deepening project.

This work involves controlled underwater blasting and removal of rock outcrops in the federal channel of the waterway.
