The City of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, has just posted the latest update on their beach renourishment project, saying that approximately 674.205 cubic yards of sand have been placed so far, making the project 46% complete.
This major coastal protection scheme, worth $11.8 million, is being undertaken by the Oak Brook based dredging contractor Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD).
The contractor moved the Dredge Illinois into Charleston Harbor last week for replacement of a turbo in the pump.
According to the official announcement, the dredger returned to Isle of Palms and resumed pumping operations on February 10.
In January, the city received the amended U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit authorizing the increase of maximum nourishment volume in the project area east of 53rd Avenue from 1,400,000 to 1,685,000 cubic yards of sand to compensate for losses occurring in this area during Hurricane Irma.
