The Wrightsville Beach Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project, worth $9.4 million, is now officially underway.
The project is Federally funded and under the supervision of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Town of Wrightsville Beach said in its latest announcement.
Earlier this month, Weeks Marine, Inc. began mobilization operations including installation of large pipes on the beach and prepping beach walkovers.
The actual dredging and pumping of sand started this week.
The contractor is currently working in an area north of the Blockade Runner Beach Resort and end just north of the Holiday Inn Resort. Each day, a work area of approximately 1,200 feet will be fenced off and work will continue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The dredging and beach fill portion of the project will take approximately 30 days, placing around 700,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beach.
Following the dredging and beach fill portion of the project, there will be a 10 to 12 day demobilization period.
Work is scheduled to be completed on or before March 31, the city said.
