The Joint Venture of Penta-Ocean Construction and Toa Corporation has won a contract for the ‘Construction of Port Facilities for Nacala Port Development Project Phase I and II’ by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Mozambique.

This $238 million project will include a significant amount of dredging work on the access channel, removing 260,000m³ of material.

Under this capital development program, the port area will be widened by land reclamation using 214,600m³ of soil fill to accommodate the construction of new container terminal, access road and port railway, etc.

Nacala Port was built 40 years ago and now has limited capacity to handle the growing volume of cargo due to significant deterioration of the port’s facilities and equipment affecting the cargo handling performance, limiting maintenance capacity, securing operational safety, etc.

This expansion scheme will increase the port’s capacity to handle cargo by constructing a dedicated container terminal with 14m deep quay wall extending up to 400m, which will be financed under ODA Loan of Japan.

According to the official announcement, it is expected that this project will last 36 months.
