Work on the restoration of the mouth of the Boyne River has started, with the project remaining on track for completion by the Boyne Tannum HookUp in May, according to the Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC).
GPC has engaged local contractor East Coast Maritime to remove material from the 15 meter wide channel, following a build-up of sediment from significant flood events.
GPC CEO Peter O’Sullivan said that restoring safe access to the Boyne River is the project’s priority: “Increased water depth will improve conditions at the river mouth, making it easier for boats to navigate the channel at all tides.”
“We’ve also ensured the works are undertaken in a way that considers and minimizes impacts on both the community and the environment.”
Member for Gladstone, Glenn Butcher, added: “It’s a project the boating and fishing community has been wanting for years, and we’re proud to be making it a reality.”
“The sediment build-up has caused serious safety and access problems and we’re pleased this will be addressed ahead of Australia’s Biggest Family Fishing Competition.”
Project works will operate intermittently over a 24 hour period, to ensure the safe passage is restored by early May.
