The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, will host a public workshop on the Upper Joachim Floodplain Management Plan at the De Soto Community Center in De Soto, Mo, today from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The workshop, organized in partnership with the City of De Soto, Jefferson County, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Geological Survey, Citizens’ Committee for Flood Relief, Missouri State Emergency Management Agency, East-West Gateway, and FEMA (Region 7), will provide an opportunity for the general public to interact with flood risk managers on potential flood damage solutions and gain information about their flood hazard.
It will also include information about the scope, schedule and benefits of Floodplain Management Planning initiated in the planning area. Representatives from the interagency partnership will be available to answer any questions residents may have regarding emergency preparedness and reducing their flood risk.
“Over the past 4 years, the frequency and intensity of flash floods in the City of De Soto have increased, ” said Shawn Sullivan, Strategic Planning Coordinator for the St. Louis District . “ This workshop offers the public an opportunity to provide input and learn more about the floodplain management planning occurring in their community.”
The Floodplain Management Plan, produced by an interagency and community partnership effort, will serve as a guide to floodplain management and provide information on upper watershed management to help reduce future flood risk.
The plan will also identify and prioritize solutions for minimizing future flood risk in the planning area.
