Work is progressing well on the Wrightsville Beach Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, reports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District.

On Tuesday, Feb. 27, contract construction workers sculpted the beach at Johnny Mercer Pier with dredged material, the Corps said.

Wilmington District Commander, Col. Robert Clark, and civil engineer, Rolando Serrano recently toured the dredge McCaskill to look at the project plans.

The dredge is currently located at the southern end of Wrightsville Beach and is pumping material to the beach where bulldozers are pushing the sand to shape the beach as designed.

On the same day, Col. Robert Clark briefed Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Tim Owens about the progress being made on the project, at the north end of Johnny Mercer Pier.

During the scheme, Weeks Marine Inc. – will take over 700,000 cubic yards of sand from the borrow site that’s located near the southern end of Wrightsville Beach.

The contractor expects that it will take approximately 30 days to renourish all 14,000 feet of the beach. The schedule calls for the project to be completed by the end of March.
